Prime Video is placing a massive bet on the creative potential of Latin America, announcing a staggering 2 billion dollar investment in original programming and live sports through 2030. The announcement came during the company’s inaugural regional showcase event in Mexico City, where executives laid out an ambitious roadmap to more than double their output of local originals. This financial commitment will span across Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Chile, targeting everything from high-end scripted series and feature films to unscripted reality formats.

According to Kelly Day, Vice President of International at Prime Video, the move is a response to the extraordinary talent and appetite for storytelling currently surging throughout the region. The company’s overarching strategy focuses on finding hyper-local narratives that possess universal appeal. Javiera Balmaceda, who leads international originals for the territory, believes that trusting local creators with significant resources allows these stories to travel globally rather than remaining confined to their borders. This approach is evident in upcoming projects ranging from forbidden romances in Uruguay to complex true crime investigations in Brazil.

Beyond fictional entertainment, the streaming giant is aggressively expanding its footprint in live sports, which has quickly become one of its primary growth drivers. With an estimated reach of over 60 million fans, Prime Video has leveraged its relationship with the NBA to see explosive growth in viewership across Brazil and Mexico. Football remains a cornerstone of this expansion as well; after adding Brazil’s Serie A and seeing success with La Casa de las Chivas in Mexico, the platform will soon become a new home for the Mexico National Team starting in late September.

To ensure long-term sustainability beyond just buying content rights, Amazon is also funding infrastructure for emerging creatives. Through initiatives like the Brasil no Set program and various scholarship partnerships in Mexico, the company is training actors and technicians from underserved backgrounds. By investing in both physical production capabilities and raw talent pipelines, Prime Video aims to cultivate a self-sustaining ecosystem that elevates Latin American storytelling on the world stage for years to come.
