The German government has officially blamed Russia for a series of drone attacks targeting Leipzig/Halle Airport last month, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between Berlin and Moscow. During a press conference in Berlin, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt explained that forensic examinations of the recovered equipment and intelligence findings pointed directly to Russian involvement. The incidents began on August 4 when a drone equipped with an explosive device was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes; while that specific device failed to detonate due to a faulty trigger, investigators believe another drone collided with an aircraft and a third was located ten days later.

In immediate response to these findings, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced severe retaliatory measures, including the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the termination of the lease for the Russian House in Berlin. Officials noted that the latter had long been suspected as a hub for espionage and propaganda. Beyond these closures, Germany plans to implement stricter entry controls for Russian citizens and increase pressure on Moscow’s shadow fleet of tankers used to bypass international sanctions. While Ambassador Sergei Nechayev was summoned to explain the situation, Kremlin spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed the accusations, claiming Berlin sponsors terrorism through its support of Ukraine and promising mirror image responses to Germany’s actions.

International allies have quickly rallied behind Berlin, with NATO chief Mark Rutte expressing full solidarity and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stating that the EU is preparing further sanctions against Russia. This breach occurs during a period where multiple NATO members have reported suspicious drone activity near critical infrastructure. For Germany, the timing is particularly sensitive as it faces internal political friction ahead of elections in Saxony Anhalt, where the far right AfD party continues to push for reduced support for Kyiv and restored ties with Vladimir Putin.

As Germany moves to strengthen its intelligence services to combat what it describes as daily hybrid warfare, new security concerns continue to emerge domestically. Police are currently investigating a separate incident involving improvised explosives found at a power substation in Brandenburg that caused local outages earlier this week. While no suspects have been named in the power grid attack, it adds to a growing sense of instability across eastern Germany as Chancellor Friedrich Merz warns that any hostile actors operating on German soil will pay a heavy price.
