4 takeaways from Fidelity on how Gen Z and millennials are investing for retirement

Despite facing a daunting financial landscape defined by soaring student debt, inflation, and a challenging housing market, younger investors are finding ways to carve out their futures. A recent Building Financial Futures report from Fidelity reveals that millennials are closing in on a psychological and financial turning point, with average retirement account balances sitting at 94,300 dollars. This puts them on the doorstep of the legendary 100,000 dollar milestone often cited by late investor Charlie Munger as the hardest hurdle to clear. Once that threshold is crossed, the power of compound interest begins to do much of the heavy lifting, accelerating wealth creation far more noticeably than during those initial years of struggling from zero.

While millennials gain momentum, Generation Z is just beginning its journey with an average balance of around 20,800 dollars. Interestingly, this youngest cohort is leaning heavily into simplicity and automation. About 80 percent of Gen Z savers keep all their assets in target date funds, which automatically shift investments from aggressive stocks to conservative bonds as they age. This trend stands in stark contrast to baby boomers, less than half of whom use such funds. The preference likely stems from these funds being the default setting for many modern employer plans and a general desire among young workers to avoid the stress of active portfolio management.

However, there are warning signs regarding missed opportunities for free money. Data shows that both millennials and Gen Z receive lower employer contribution rates compared to older generations. With Gen Z averaging only 4.1 percent compared to the 5.1 percent seen with boomers and Gen X, there is a strong possibility that younger employees aren’t contributing enough from their own paychecks to trigger their full company matches. Essentially, some young workers may be leaving guaranteed money on the table simply because they haven’t optimized their individual savings rates.

On a brighter note, Gen Z is currently leading the charge in increasing how much they save each month more aggressively than any other group. While this might be partly due to having more room for growth coming from lower baseline rates, legislation is also playing a role. The SECURE 2.0 Act now mandates automatic savings rate increases for many new retirement accounts created after late 2022. By nudging participants toward savings rates between 10 and 15 percent through automation, the system is helping a generation burdened by current economic pressures build a sturdier foundation for their eventual retirement.
