Google Deepens Commitment to Finland with Two-Year €13 Billion investment in AI Infrastructure

Google is significantly expanding its footprint in Northern Europe with a massive thirteen billion euro investment in Finnish digital infrastructure scheduled for 2027 and 2028. This move marks the company’s largest single investment on the continent, focusing heavily on the expansion of data centers and supporting technology across Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. By doubling down on its fifteen year history in the region, Google aims to solidify Finland as a global model for how artificial intelligence infrastructure can be scaled responsibly while maintaining strict environmental standards.

The economic ripple effects of this project are expected to be substantial. During the initial construction phase, Google estimates the initiative will contribute an average of three point six billion euros annually to Finland’s GDP and support over thirty seven thousand jobs nationwide. While sixteen thousand of those positions will be centered in construction, the long term operational phase is projected to sustain seven thousand permanent roles. These high skilled positions are anticipated to offer wages roughly twenty four percent higher than the national median, providing a significant boost to local economies and service industries surrounding the sites.

Beyond hardware and employment, the investment strategy emphasizes energy stability and decarbonization. To avoid straining the power grid, Google is strategically placing new infrastructure in northern regions closer to carbon free energy sources. One of the most critical components of this plan is a twenty two year agreement with Fortum to extend the life of the Loviisa nuclear power plant. Without this partnership, the plant which provides ten percent of Finland’s electricity could have faced closure by 2030. Combined with new onshore wind agreements totaling six hundred twenty nine megawatts, these efforts aim to keep electricity affordable for residents while powering AI tools like Gemini and Search.

This holistic approach extends into community welfare through dedicated funds for biodiversity, education, and research. Building on previous successes in Hamina where Google converted an old paper mill into a state of art facility using seawater cooling systems, the company intends to integrate further heat recovery programs for local homes and businesses. Through collaborations with partners like Nokia and Elisa, Google hopes that this expanded digital backbone will allow Finnish organizations to develop their own AI powered solutions more efficiently, ensuring that the technological leap benefits both global users and local citizens alike.
