The Trump Administration Is Trying to Get Musk and X Out of a $137 Million EU Fine

The United States government is stepping into a high stakes legal battle to shield Elon Musk and his social media platform X from a 137 million dollar fine imposed by the European Union. The Department of Justice, working alongside the Department of State, has filed an application to support Musk’s effort to annul the penalty in the EU General Court. This move marks a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Brussels over how big tech companies should be regulated across borders.

At the heart of the dispute is the Digital Services Act, a sweeping set of rules requiring online platforms to combat illegal content and maintain transparency. The European Commission issued the fine after finding that X misled users by labeling paying subscribers as verified accounts and failed to provide adequate data access for researchers. While X has since agreed to some fixes regarding data access, both Musk and his legal team have slammed the original investigation as biased and superficial.

Federal officials in the U.S. argue that this isn’t just about one billionaire but about protecting American innovation from what they call regulatory overreach. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate stated that the U.S. will not tolerate attempts by the European Commission to control American engines of economic growth. By intervening, the Justice Department aims to prevent a precedent that could leave other U.S.-based giants like Meta, Google, and Microsoft vulnerable to similar sanctions under the same framework.

This diplomatic clash mirrors broader rhetoric coming from the top of the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has previously described such penalties as overseas extortion and has even suggested using tariffs against countries that implement digital regulations he views as discriminatory toward U.S. technology. Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance has characterized these specific content moderation mandates as authoritarian censorship, signaling that this legal fight may be part of a larger trade and ideological war between the two allies.
