Ukraine has resumed its strategic bombing campaign against Russian oil refineries following a brief and tense ceasefire imposed by the United States. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled the end of the restraint in a blunt conversation with the Financial Times, stating that his patience had run out and any previous blocks on targeting these facilities were now gone. The decision comes shortly after reports of a massive strike hitting a refinery in Russia’s western Ryazan region, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between Kyiv and the administration of Donald Trump.

The friction stems from what Zelenskyy describes as a betrayal by the U.S., characterized by a dangerous withdrawal of critical defense support. For several days, Ukraine adhered to an energy ceasefire announced unilaterally by Trump, who sought to stabilize global fuel prices ahead of domestic elections. However, Kyiv claims that while they held back their drones, Russia continued to relentlessly hammer Ukraine’s power grid. This imbalance, coupled with allegations that the U.S. threatened to withhold military intelligence unless refinery strikes ceased, pushed Zelenskyy toward a breaking point.

Adding to the crisis is a sudden disruption in satellite connectivity provided by Elon Musk’s Starlink services. Ukrainian officials report that throttled internet speeds severely hampered their ability to coordinate battlefield missions and intercept Russian drones during a wave of massive aerial assaults. While Musk suggested that control over these systems rests with the U.S. government and expressed his view that Zelenskyy should step down, Ukrainian sources indicate that military versions of the service began returning to normal operation late Thursday.

European and Ukrainian allies fear these maneuvers are part of a broader strategy to force Kyiv into making significant concessions at the negotiating table through artificial pressure. By easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports and limiting intelligence sharing, critics argue the U.S. is backtracking on long standing promises to help Ukraine repel the invasion. As winter approaches, military experts warn that any sustained loss of American technological and intelligence support could critically undermine Ukraine’s ability to hold its ground against Moscow’s offensive.
