Violence erupted across the occupied West Bank on Friday as masked Israeli settlers launched a series of coordinated attacks targeting Palestinian farmers during the critical annual olive harvest. In the town of Abu Falah near Ramallah, dozens of settlers armed with clubs and firearms clashed with locals, leaving at least six Palestinians injured. Witnesses report that the attackers hurled stones while Israeli military vehicles stood nearby; when Palestinians attempted to defend themselves, the military responded by firing tear gas into the crowds. Similar chaos unfolded near Turmus Ayya, where settlers set fire to three cars and looted hundreds of bags of harvested olives.

Amidst the turmoil, Heidi Levine, a photographer for the Washington Post, became a target of a brutal assault. Despite wearing clear journalistic markings, Levine was pushed to the ground and repeatedly kicked for over ten minutes until Palestinian colleagues managed to pull her away. Speaking from a hospital bed in Ramallah, she credited her flak jacket and helmet with saving her life. Attackers also robbed her of her phone, wallet, passport, and professional equipment. The Israeli Foreign Press Association later criticized local authorities for ignoring repeated pleas to address a growing culture of lawlessness directed toward journalists and civilians.

Rights organizations warn that this year’s harvest season has seen an unprecedented spike in aggression. According to the group Yesh Din, there have been at least 170 attacks since late September alone, resulting in four deaths and over 100 injuries among Palestinians. This escalation coincides with new restrictive military orders that bar Palestinians from accessing roughly 8,800 hectares of their own agricultural land in Area C without official permits—a significant increase from previous years—while simultaneously easing restrictions for Israeli citizens.

For many families in the region, these groves represent far more than agriculture; they are an essential economic lifeline following the revocation of thousands of work permits after October 7 last year. Activists describe a systematic campaign involving both physical violence and state-backed displacement through the razing of trees by bulldozers. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has occasionally condemned these acts as the work of a small minority, critics argue that his right wing government provides tacit protection for settlers who rarely face legal consequences for their actions.
