A powerful magnitude 6.7 earthquake rattled the southern Andes mountains of Peru on Thursday afternoon, leaving at least two people injured and causing widespread structural damage across multiple regions. The tremor struck at approximately 1 p.m. local time, with the epicenter located about 24 miles northwest of Upahuacho in the Ayacucho region. While the quake originated deep underground at roughly 41 miles, its effects were felt far beyond the immediate center, shaking cities from Ica and Cusco all the way to the capital city of Lima.

Emergency officials confirmed that the injuries occurred in Coracora, the capital of Parinacochas province, where residents were hurt while rushing to evacuate their homes. Beyond the human toll, Luis Vasquez, head of Civil Defense, reported significant infrastructure damage throughout several districts in Ayacucho and Cusco. Authorities have identified twenty two damaged homes along with six health centers and a school that suffered impacts in towns such as Puquio and Pichari. There were also reports of rockfalls occurring on hillsides near Coracora, though the Peruvian Navy quickly moved to reassure the public that there was no threat of a tsunami.

This latest event serves as a stark reminder of Peru’s precarious position within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone notorious for frequent and often violent seismic activity. Residents remain acutely aware of these risks following historical tragedies like the massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake in 2007 that claimed nearly 600 lives in the Ica region. For now, recovery efforts are focused on assessing further stability in affected mountain villages as teams work to secure damaged buildings and ensure resident safety.
