Stock futures are flat after Treasury yield rebound sparks sell-off: Live updates

Wall Street is attempting to find its footing on Friday morning as stock futures show modest gains following a bruising session that threatened several multi week winning streaks. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed slightly in early trading, providing a glimmer of hope after the major indices suffered sharp pullbacks on Thursday. Those losses have placed the broader market on pace for weekly declines, with the tech heavy Nasdaq feeling particularly the pinch.

The volatility stems largely from a resurgence in long dated U.S. Treasury yields, which spiked after government attempts to stabilize the bond market failed to soothe inflation fears. Analysts suggest that the Treasury’s current strategy of doubling debt buybacks is merely shifting the maturity profile of its obligations rather than reducing the overall debt load. Some experts have gone so far as to compare this approach to paying off a mortgage with a credit card, arguing that it does nothing to resolve the core issue of how much debt global markets must actually absorb.

Beyond the domestic bond turmoil, international markets presented a fragmented picture. In Asia, results were mixed with China’s CSI 300 closing higher while Japan’s Nikkei 225 dipped slightly. Meanwhile, European bourses struggled for clear direction, reflecting an overarching sense of uncertainty among global investors. This instability coincides with rising energy costs and geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which continue to keep oil prices volatile and push Japanese inflation toward its highest levels of the year.

Despite the general nervousness surrounding equities and bonds, some safe haven assets found strength. Gold surged on Friday, positioning itself for a third consecutive weekly gain as a weakening dollar provided additional support. On a brighter note for individual corporate performers, Ross Stores saw its shares jump significantly in after hours trading following stronger than expected quarterly earnings reports, proving that strong fundamentals can still drive growth even amidst macroeconomic headwinds.
