British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced during a visit to Kyiv on Monday that the United Kingdom will assist Ukraine in producing its own long range missiles by sharing classified technical data. This move involves the defense firm MBDA releasing specific details regarding British components used in the SCALP missile, allowing Ukraine to begin assembling these high precision weapons domestically. The announcement came as Burnham joined other international leaders in celebrating Ukraine’s Independence Day, marking a significant escalation in technical support for the embattled nation.

The SCALP missile, a French produced counterpart to the British Storm Shadow, is renowned for its ability to evade detection and strike hardened targets like bunkers and critical infrastructure from over 155 miles away. While this partnership provides Ukraine with a potent deep strike capability that exceeds the power of current drone fleets, military analysts warn that the impact will not be immediate. Experts suggest that operational missiles assembled within Ukraine likely wont see action until next year at the earliest, meaning they offer little relief for the current winter campaign.

Despite the strategic value of offensive capabilities, some researchers argue that this initiative does not address Ukraine’s most urgent vulnerability: air defense. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has recently highlighted a shortage of Patriot systems just as Russian ballistic missile attacks are intensifying. While the SCALP missiles can eventually be used to destroy the launch sites where those Russian missiles originate, there remains a critical gap in protecting Ukrainian cities from incoming strikes due to production struggles among Western allies.

The decision has predictably drawn sharp criticism from Moscow, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accusing London of fanning the flames of conflict. When questioned about these accusations, Prime Minister Burnham countered by asking who actually started the fire. This latest agreement builds upon Britain’s role as a pioneer in supplying long range weaponry to Kyiv since 2023 and coincides with separate efforts to develop ground launched systems capable of hitting targets more than 300 miles away.
