Democrats to investigate ‘miraculous’ rise of Trump Jr’s investment firm

Democratic members of a powerful congressional committee have launched an investigation into the meteoric rise of 1789 Capital, a venture capital firm that saw its fortunes shift dramatically shortly after recruiting Donald Trump Jr. as a partner following his father’s 2024 election victory. According to SEC filings highlighted by Representative Jamie Raskin, the firm’s assets under management surged from roughly 150 million dollars in early 2024 to a reported 3.5 billion dollars by May. A substantial portion of this growth comes from overseas sources, with foreign investors accounting for approximately forty percent of the managed assets.

Representative Raskin described the turnaround as miraculous, alleging that a firm once plagued by market flops suddenly gained an uncanny ability to predict which companies would benefit from federal policy shifts or administration funding. As a primary example, Raskin pointed to an investment in Vulcan Elements, a rare earth company that received hundreds of millions in loans and grants from the Pentagon and Department of Commerce shortly after receiving backing from the firm. He further noted that 1789 Capital holds stakes in Anduril Industries, a military contractor led by a prominent Trump ally that has seen its revenue double during the current administration.

The scrutiny extends beyond financial gains to potential conflicts of interest regarding government appointments. Democratic investigators claim that individuals with ties to 1789 Capital have been appointed to the Defense Policy Board, where they now advise the Pentagon on the very sectors in which their associated ventures operate. This overlap has led Raskin to argue that such astonishing growth could not be attributed to mere luck or skill, suggesting instead that insider political influence and systemic corruption are at play.

In response to these accusations, legal counsel for 1789 Capital dismissed them as unsubstantiated talking points and characterized the inquiry as nothing more than a partisan stunt designed for political harassment rather than legitimate oversight. Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr. has maintained that he is a private citizen who does not discuss business with his father nor hold any formal role within the administration. Despite these denials, Democrats continue to push for internal records and communication logs involving federal officials to determine how exactly the firm achieved its sudden wealth.
