Nepal is grappling with a humanitarian catastrophe of staggering proportions after devastating floods claimed more than 900 lives and left thousands missing. Officials confirmed on Monday that the number of disappeared persons has surged to over 4,200, nearly doubling previous estimates. The tragedy began earlier this week when a glacier collapsed near the border with China’s Tibet region, sending a wall of water and debris tearing through mountain communities. Relief organizations have described the scene as overwhelming, noting that entire towns were simply wiped off the map by the sheer velocity of the floodwaters.

The scale of the loss has pushed local infrastructure to a breaking point. In the Chitwan district, morgues became so overcrowded that authorities were forced to dig hundreds of mass graves in a forest to prevent a public health crisis caused by decomposing remains. Many of those recovered were beyond recognition, having been swept miles downstream from the initial disaster zone in Rasuwa. Meanwhile, desperate rescue operations continue overnight under spotlights and explosives as teams attempt to reach nearly one thousand hydropower workers believed to be trapped inside flooded tunnels across two districts.

International aid is pouring into the region as Nepal mobilizes every available resource for recovery. The United States has activated millions in humanitarian assistance and is working to locate dozens of missing American citizens, while nations such as Qatar, Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom have provided critical support. Similar devastation has been reported in China’s Tibet region, where officials say climate-driven glacier instability triggered the event. As rescuers battle mudslides and unstable terrain, the Nepal Red Cross reports that upwards of 90,000 people have been affected by the deluge.
