Vice President Sara Duterte walked out of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court on Saturday after posting bail following a dramatic legal escalation between the country’s top two leaders. Dressed in black, the vice president emerged to a crowd of cheering supporters, pausing to embrace a sobbing follower as chants of her name filled the air. Her release comes just one day after an arrest warrant was issued on charges that she publicly threatened to arrange the assassinations of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

The legal battle centers on comments made during a 2024 online news conference where Duterte allegedly stated she would have the trio killed by an assassin if she were murdered herself. While prosecutors view these statements as grave threats, Duterte maintains she was merely expressing fear for her own safety amidst escalating political tensions. To secure her temporary freedom, her legal team paid 360,000 pesos in bail for three counts of grave threats. As she headed toward her vehicle, a visibly shaken Duterte asked journalists to surround her for protection, claiming she felt unsafe around police personnel whom she accused of harassing her since 2023.

This clash marks the total collapse of the once-powerful alliance between the Marcos and Duterte dynasties, who ran together in the 2022 elections. The rift has deepened into a full-scale political war, with the House of Representatives already voting to impeach her over separate allegations involving misused state funds and unexplained wealth. With a televised Senate trial underway, the stakes could not be higher; a conviction could permanently bar Duterte from holding public office and end any hope of her running for president in 2028.

Beyond the courtroom drama, the feud reflects broader ideological splits within the Philippine government. While President Marcos has strengthened ties with the United States to counter Chinese aggression in the South China Sea, Duterte has faced criticism for her silence regarding Beijing’s actions. This tension is further compounded by family trauma, as Sara Duterte remains vocal in her criticism of the administration for allowing her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, to be detained by the International Criminal Court in The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity.
