French authorities are launching a focused investigation into a passenger train derailment in northern France to determine if the accident was caused by a deliberate act of sabotage. Prosecutor Sebastien Gallois stated on Saturday that investigators believe a stray piece of rail found on the tracks likely triggered the incident, though they have not yet established how the metal ended up there. While official confirmation regarding foul play is still pending, the discovery has shifted the focus toward potential malicious intent.

The derailment occurred Friday evening near Cleon, just south of Rouen, while the train was traveling between Rouen and Caen in Normandy. There were 186 passengers on board at the time of the crash, which sent shockwaves through the local community. Emergency services responded rapidly, deploying roughly 140 firefighters and medical personnel to the scene shortly before 8 p.m. In total, 44 people required medical treatment for their injuries. Among them was an 18 year old woman who was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, though officials later confirmed she is now stable and her life is no longer in danger.

Passengers described a terrifying sequence of events as the train suddenly lost stability. One traveler told local radio that several jolts preceded a violent impact that threw people from their seats and shattered carriage windows, allowing ballast stones from the trackbed to fly inside the cabins. He described himself as still shaking from the experience long after being rescued from the wreckage.

To reconstruct the final moments before the crash, investigators have seized the trains black box and appointed a court expert to analyze the mechanical failures. Prosecutors also noted that early screenings cleared the train driver of any drug or alcohol impairment. As interviews with witnesses continue, officials remain determined to uncover whether this was a tragic maintenance failure or a calculated attack on French infrastructure.
