A sobering new report from the Pentagon inspector general reveals that the United States is grappling with significant ammunition shortages following a costly military campaign in Iran. According to the mandatory disclosure sent to Congress, Operation Epic Fury cost an estimated 33.4 billion dollars between late February and June, with a staggering 22.3 billion dollars of that total spent exclusively on munitions. This massive expenditure has created what officials call strategic inventory shortfalls and exposed critical bottlenecks within the domestic industrial base tasked with replenishing these stocks.
The findings stand in stark contrast to public assurances provided by President Trump, who recently claimed that the U.S. possesses virtually unlimited amounts of high grade ammunition and is producing weapons at unprecedented levels. While top Pentagon leadership had previously denied reports of scarcity, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been privately pressuring defense contractors to ramp up manufacturing. At Lockheed Martin, where Patriot missiles costing roughly 4 million dollars each are produced, executives have described the current push for increased output as controlled chaos.
Beyond the depletion of weaponry, the conflict has taken a heavy toll on American hardware and infrastructure. The inspector general listed several losses, including four destroyed F-15s and dozens of MQ-9 Reaper drones. Additionally, the State Department reported spending nearly 80 million dollars on emergency evacuations while another 184 million dollars was required to repair diplomatic facilities hit by Iranian strikes across Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Hundreds of buildings at various U.S. bases throughout the region were also damaged or destroyed, though final repair costs remain undetermined.
Military analysts suggest that while current stockpiles may be sufficient to sustain operations against Iran, the drain on resources creates a dangerous vulnerability elsewhere. Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and International Studies warned that these shortfalls make a potential conflict with China particularly daunting, noting that while the U.S. might survive a first month of fighting, sustaining a long term engagement would pose a monumental challenge given the current state of munitions reserves.
