British police sparked a massive security operation in western England on Sunday morning after arresting five men on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack near RAF Fairford. The arrests followed reports of three suspicious vehicles heading toward the airfield, which has been utilized by the U.S. Air Force to support military strikes against Iran. Authorities declared a major incident, deploying a heavy emergency presence and establishing a wide cordon around the facility located roughly ninety minutes outside of London.

The scene remained tense throughout the day as army ordnance disposal teams moved in to examine several white vans parked near the base. Aerial footage captured a bomb disposal robot meticulously searching the vehicles while roadblocks kept the public away from the danger zone. Local residents in the nearby village of Whelford described a chaotic morning, with eighty five homes evacuated and displaced families sent to a neighborhood recreation center for their own safety.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone stated that investigators are still working to establish the full nature of the plot, though initial charges focused on violations of the Explosives Act before escalating to terrorism suspicions. While officials have not yet released details regarding the identity or motives of the suspects, U.S. European Command confirmed they have remained vigilant and recently heightened security measures across their installations in Europe due to evolving threats.

The incident arrives amid simmering geopolitical tensions, following warnings from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that any base used to launch attacks on Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target. Reacting to the news, President Donald Trump praised the cooperation between American and British forces as an amazing job in preventing significant damage. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged calm and cautioned against speculation while counter terrorism units continue their investigation into how far these plans had progressed.
