A devastating airstrike targeted a bustling marketplace in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state on Monday, leaving at least 49 people dead and dozens more injured. According to reports from the Arakan Army, a powerful ethnic armed group that controls the area, a fighter jet dropped two bombs near the heart of Kyauktaw township around midday. The strike hit during peak hours, claiming the lives of shoppers, street vendors, and pedestrians who had gathered at what officials describe as the region’s primary wholesale hub.

Rescue worker Wai Hun Aung told the Associated Press that 58 people were wounded in the blast, with 22 remaining in critical condition. Social media footage from the aftermath depicts a chaotic scene of burning buildings, mangled vehicles, and a partially collapsed bridge. This incident marks one of the deadliest aerial attacks in recent memory for the state, adding to a growing toll of civilian casualties as the military continues its campaign against pro-democracy forces and ethnic minorities.

The tragedy unfolds against a backdrop of systemic instability following the February 2021 military coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government. While Myanmar’s military typically maintains that it only hits legitimate tactical targets and often labels resistance fighters as terrorists, they have remained silent regarding this specific massacre. Meanwhile, the Arakan Army has vowed to take retaliatory action against those responsible for what they characterize as a deliberate attack on civilians.

Rakhine state has become a focal point of intense combat since late last year when the Arakan Army launched an expansive offensive to secure autonomy from the central government. As these groups capture more territory, including nearly all major townships in the state, the military has responded by restricting vital trade routes and increasing air raids. Just last month, another similar strike on a hospital in Mrauk-U township left scores dead and wounded, highlighting a grim pattern of warfare where noncombatants frequently bear the brunt of the violence.
