A routine FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a scene of chaos on Wednesday when a violent altercation between the two pilots forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The incident sparked immediate alarm across the region, leading Israel to scramble fighter jets amid fears that the plane was being hijacked. According to reports from Israeli security officials, the struggle in the cockpit led to a terrifying loss of altitude, with flight tracking data showing the Boeing 737 Max 8 plummeting more than 17,000 feet in just two minutes.
Passengers described a harrowing atmosphere onboard as screams filled the cabin while one pilot reportedly called for help. Witnesses recounted a brutal brawl that spilled beyond the cockpit, claiming that one pilot was stabbed during the fight. One female passenger told reporters that several individuals ended up with shirts covered in blood, while social media videos appeared to show men lying injured on the floor. Some accounts suggest that fellow crew members and passengers had to intervene to subdue a pilot who was attempting to seize control of the aircraft, which sources identified as an Omani national.
The plane eventually touched down safely at an airport in Tabuk, located next to a Saudi military base. While official confirmations from Saudi and Israeli authorities have been limited, the Office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement assuring the public that the situation was under control and efforts were underway to return passengers home. The event put regional tensions on high alert, especially given recent warnings from Netanyahu regarding escalating security threats toward Israel.
As a recovery flight was dispatched to Tabuk to retrieve those stranded, diplomatic figures weighed in on the unusual nature of the crisis. US Ambassador Mike Huckabee noted on social media that the diversion had placed much of the Middle East on full alert, remarking that such an encounter is far from an ordinary flying experience. Though emergency landings for personal disputes among crews are rare, this particular clash nearly resulted in what one official described as a major disaster narrowly avoided.
