Germany has been rocked by what experts are calling its biggest espionage scandal of the century following the arrest of August Hanning, the former head of the BND foreign intelligence agency. The 80 year old official was apprehended at his home near Münster on Tuesday morning as part of a sweeping operation conducted by the federal prosecutor’s office. Hanning, who led Germany’s spy network from 1998 to 2005 and later held a senior role at the Interior Ministry, now faces severe charges including espionage, disclosure of state secrets, and attempted treason.

The investigation reveals a complex web of betrayal involving Hanning and his former chief of staff, identified only as Manfred D. Prosecutors allege that starting around 2010, long after Hanning had left his post as spy chief, the two men entered into a clandestine agreement. While Manfred D. continued to serve as chief of staff for subsequent BND leaders, he is accused of funneling roughly 2,000 classified documents back to Hanning in exchange for money. This flow of sensitive information reportedly continued until mid 2022, allowing Hanning to leverage top secret data for his own private consulting business.

Beyond the domestic leak, authorities believe Hanning acted as an asset for a foreign power. The prosecution claims he maintained close ties with a representative of another country’s intelligence service, passing along political insights derived from the stolen documents. Although officials have not yet named the specific foreign entity involved, members of parliament have reacted with outrage. Marc Henrichmann, chair of the intelligence oversight committee, warned that any individual aligning themselves with enemies of German democracy would eventually be caught and punished.

As police conduct coordinated raids across Berlin and other regions, both suspects are expected to face an investigating judge this week. The probe reportedly gained momentum through connections to a separate high profile trial involving businesswoman Christine Block. For now, the German government remains focused on determining exactly how much damage was done and identifying every piece of classified intel that may have reached foreign shores through one of its most trusted former servants.
