Alibaba has seen its quarterly profit plummet by 75 percent as the Chinese tech giant pours billions into artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company reported profits of 10.5 billion yuan, or about 1.6 billion dollars, for the period between April and June, a sharp decline from the 43.1 billion yuan earned during the same window last year. Despite the hit to the bottom line, overall revenue climbed 9 percent to nearly 40 billion dollars, signaling that while costs are soaring, demand for their digital services remains strong.
The financial dip is largely a result of aggressive spending on hardware and compute capacity. Capital expenditures jumped 75 percent to approximately 10 billion dollars this quarter alone. Company officials cited fluctuations in procurement cycles and the rising cost of chip components as primary drivers for the expense. Specifically, Alibaba is expanding its CPU capacity to prepare for a surge in customers adopting AI agents, betting that these massive upfront investments will secure its dominance in the evolving tech landscape.
There are signs that the gamble is paying off in terms of growth, as revenue from AI cloud and compute services leaped 45 percent to reach 7.2 billion dollars. CEO Eddie Wu remained optimistic during an earnings conference, suggesting that as the company ramps up its supply chain, both revenue acceleration and profitability will improve in future quarters. This strategy aligns with a broader commitment to spend roughly 56 billion dollars over three years on cloud and AI development.
Beyond the balance sheet, Alibaba is positioning itself against global competitors with its flagship Qwen AI models and new agentic services for businesses. The company recently previewed its Qwen3.8-Max model, claiming it ranks among the top performers globally alongside rivals like Anthropic. With an ambitious long term goal of reaching 100 billion dollars in annual AI and cloud revenue within five years, Alibaba appears willing to sacrifice short term margins to win the race for artificial intelligence supremacy in Asia and beyond.
