Missouri’s oldest business association is making a sudden and aggressive move into the political arena. In a significant shift in strategy, the Missouri State Medical Association has invested 1.5 million dollars into two newly formed political action committees known as Asclepius PAC and Patients First PAC. While the organization has long maintained a small committee for member contributions, ethics commission records reveal that the association itself has barely touched its own funds for political purposes since 2001, remaining largely dormant in this regard since 2014.
Jeff Howell, the association’s executive vice president, says the surge in spending is about ensuring high quality healthcare for residents by influencing upcoming legislative elections. Specifically, the group is pushing to eliminate managed care for Medicaid recipients in favor of a traditional fee-for-service model and seeking stricter limits on prior authorization requirements for medical services. This strategic pivot places the medical group among the heaviest hitters in state lobbying circles, trailing only a handful of billionaire donors and elite PACs in terms of raw financial power.
The sudden influx of cash hasn’t gone unnoticed by veteran lobbyists in Jefferson City. Andy Arnold, who manages Paladin PAC, noted that dropping such a large sum typically sets off alarm bells across the capital as other players try to decipher the motivation behind the spend. The association already signaled its willingness to be provocative earlier this year when it poured 100,000 dollars into a challenging campaign against an incumbent senator, a move that observers described as highly unusual for a traditionally quiet professional body.
While some critics argue that the medical association should have been more politically active years ago, especially regarding Medicaid expansion efforts during previous administrations, current leadership views this as a necessity of modern governance. According to Howell, if others intend to play the political game to shape policy, the medical community must do the same to protect its interests. Founded in 1850, the association may be one of Missouri’s most established institutions, but it is now acting like one of its newest and most aggressive political disruptors.
