In a swift and decisive military move, Houthi rebels have seized full control of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, securing one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. Early Friday morning, rebel forces captured the final remaining coastal towns held by the internationally recognized Yemeni government and pushed forward to occupy strategic islands within the Bab al-Mandeb strait. This advance includes the capture of the town of Mocha and movements toward Dhubab, effectively granting the Iran-backed group total dominance over the narrow waterway that connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea.

The geopolitical stakes of this takeover are immense, as Bab al-Mandeb serves as a vital alternative to the Strait of Hormuz for global energy shipments heading toward Europe. With the current tensions between the United States and Iran already disrupting traditional flow routes, markets reacted sharply to the news. Oil prices climbed toward 100 dollars a barrel for the first time in months, while diesel prices in the U.S. surged past six dollars a gallon. Analysts suggest that by controlling this corridor, the Houthis now possess significant leverage over international shipping traffic and global energy security.

Despite these alarming developments, members of the Houthi politburo have attempted to calm international nerves, insisting that freedom of navigation remains safe and that commercial trade should not be concerned about threats from Yemeni soil. However, these assurances stand in contrast to previous campaigns where Houthi fighters targeted vessels in the region. While some reports indicate Saudi airstrikes may have targeted Mocha airport in response to the advance, there are currently few signs that government forces are capable of launching a successful counteroffensive to reclaim the coast.

This escalation reflects a broader regional volatility fueled by Iran’s ongoing confrontation with Washington. As Tehran urges an end to Saudi blockades and pushes for new negotiations, diplomatic efforts led by Oman are underway to stabilize Gulf relations and potentially reopen other choked waterways like Hormuz. For now, however, the Houthi grip on Yemen’s coast transforms a local civil conflict into a primary concern for every nation dependent on stable oil prices and open seas.
