Salesforce shares surged 12 percent in extended trading Wednesday after the cloud giant delivered a financial report that comfortably beat Wall Street expectations. The company reported quarterly revenue of 11.35 billion dollars, reflecting an 11 percent increase from the previous year. However, the real story lay in the net income, which skyrocketed 87 percent to reach 3.53 billion dollars. Much of this windfall came from a massive 2.6 billion dollar gain tied to its strategic investment in Anthropic, the high profile artificial intelligence startup that has recently attracted similar interest from tech titans like Microsoft and Alphabet.

The rally comes at a critical time for CEO Marc Benioff, who used the earnings call to push back against critics claiming that generative AI would make traditional software obsolete. Dismissing rumors of what some have called a SaaSpocalypse, Benioff insisted that predictions regarding the end of software have failed to materialize for his firm. Instead, Salesforce is leaning heavily into AI integration, announcing a new plugin for Anthropic’s Claude designed to help sales teams automate email composition and record updates via chat. This strategy appears to be paying off financially, as annualized revenue from Agentforce AI products leaped 240 percent year over year to top 1.5 billion dollars.

Beyond the balance sheet boosts from AI investments, Salesforce showed strong operational momentum with several major wins. The company secured a significant 1.6 billion dollar contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and moved forward with plans to acquire customer service startup Fin for 3.6 billion dollars, a deal expected to close sooner than originally planned. While Chief Operating Officer Robin Washington noted some headwinds and volatility within their integration and analytics license sales, those concerns were largely overshadowed by robust free cash flow and positive future guidance.

Looking ahead, Salesforce raised its full year revenue outlook to between 46.1 billion and 46.4 billion dollars, signaling confidence in its growth trajectory despite a rocky start to the calendar year where shares had previously dipped significantly compared to the broader market index. By combining aggressive acquisitions with deep bets on leading AI labs, Benioff seems determined to prove that legacy software giants can not only survive the era of large language models but thrive because of them.
