Instagram head expected to testify in Meta trial

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, is expected to take the witness stand on Tuesday in a high stakes federal trial in Oakland, California. The proceedings center on allegations from several state attorneys general who claim that Meta deliberately engineered its platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, to hook children and foster addiction. These officials argue that the tech giant mislead the public regarding the actual safety of these apps, turning user engagement into a calculated strategy at the expense of youth mental health.

Meta has remained defiant in the face of these accusations, dismissing them as unsubstantiated and characterizing the legal action as an attempt by states to secure an outlandish financial payout. A company spokesperson recently argued that the plaintiffs have provided no real proof that users were misled and suggested that common features are being unfairly framed as harmful. With potential damages estimated at a staggering 1.4 trillion dollars, Meta maintains it has established robust protections for teenagers and believes the courts will vindicate its practices.

This appearance follows a previous legal battle where Mosseri testified regarding similar claims of app addiction involving a young plaintiff who suffered severe body image issues. During that testimony, Mosseri drew a sharp distinction between clinical addiction and what he termed problematic use, suggesting some people simply spend too much time on the platform rather than suffering from a medical condition. He also noted a constant tension between maintaining free speech and implementing safety measures, arguing that users often push back when restrictive features are introduced.

While Meta continues to fight current charges, it is still reeling from a separate victory for plaintiffs in May. In that instance, a jury found both Meta and YouTube negligent for failing to warn families about the dangers of their designs, resulting in a six million dollar award to one family. As opening statements conclude in this new multi state lawsuit led by California, Colorado, New Jersey, and Kentucky, all eyes turn toward Mosseri to see how he defends his leadership over Instagram’s design and engineering teams.
